YEC Radio: Big Big 45 Biography

DJ 45 Show

Who is Big Big 45?

I was born in Carriacou Grenada, came to the UK (Huddersfield) at age 8yrs. My love of music started around the age of 16yrs when I used to ‘MC/Toast’ for a local black club named ‘Black Star’. This is where I really began to hone my DJ skills that have enabled me to become a well known DJ talent locally, regionally and nationally (I’ve even played in Carriacou).

More about Big Big 45 …

My repertoire varies from small scale local dances and events to larger prestigious ones. I am often hired to play at weddings, christenings, parties, local & regional carnivals as well as funeral receptions. Although my passion and expertise is and has always been for music of ‘black’ origin (particularly Soca) I am often booked for mainstream/non-black events and occasions as I can diversify musically.

However, as much as I love playing music I have a very ‘conscious’ and ‘black liberation’ philosophy and also volunteer my services at community events across West Yorkshire when ‘liberation’ speakers are being hosted. In addition I have played at local Kwanzaa celebrations (an African inspired cultural celebration). To this end I use my platform as a DJ on this radio station whenever possible to impart knowledge on black issues and /or invite a range of speakers on who have valuable information to share.

Finally, I am a firm believer in giving back to the community and as such have involved myself in various charitable endeavours. On several occasions over the years I have offered my services free of charge for fundraising dances (eg sickle cell anaemia, epilepsy etc). I have raised money in particular for causes in my native homeland of Carriacou over the years too. However, my most treasured accomplishment to date was the founding of the Black Men’s Cycling Group better known as ‘Cycle of Life’ whose main aim is to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of local Black Men as well as raise awareness of Prostate Cancer. Since we started cycling in August 2013 we have raised almost £6000 for the cause.
